At Colorado Adolescent Counseling, we often see children and adolescents struggling with overwhelming emotions that stem from difficult family experiences. These emotions can feel impossible to manage alone—but with the right tools and guidance, real change is possible.

The Challenge: An 11-year-old boy came to us struggling with anger and depression as a result of past family trauma. His emotions often spilled over into his daily life, making it hard to feel calm at home or stay focused at school. Moments of stress quickly turned into yelling, frustration, and hopelessness.
The Approach: Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the therapist worked with him to identify and challenge the negative thinking patterns that fueled his anger. Together, they practiced replacing those unhelpful thoughts with more realistic and balanced ways of looking at situations. This shift helped him pause, reflect, and cope with his feelings in healthier ways.
The Results: The progress was inspiring. The client reported experiencing little to almost no anger outbursts at home or school. In moments of stress, he was able to stop, take a breath, and think through his response before reacting. Instead of yelling or letting anger take over, he developed healthier solutions that left him feeling more in control and less overwhelmed.
Why This Matters: This case shows the power of CBT in helping young people gain control over their emotions. By challenging unhelpful thoughts and replacing them with positive ones, children can break free from cycles of anger and depression—and begin to feel hope, peace, and confidence again.
